MoDo's in Love

With Ali G. This is (at least) her second column dedicated to his show in the last couple years. This one wasn't published during the onset of war, though, and it does tie in loosely to something about Bush; I'm not sure if that means it's a more or less successful MoDo column.

Oh, if only he had gotten to interview Dowd in his old days...I imagine she'd fall for his act as well.

I try not to hate anyone. But Dowd, it's hard not to. She's patronizing, mean-spirited and needs to be taken down a notch or two.

And let me get this straight...who are all these folks now lining up to be hawks on Iran all the sudden? Do they really, honestly wish that we had invaded Iran instead of Iraq?

I haven't seen the new show, but I did get a chance to download a bunch of clips of his UK shows a while ago -- I find Borat especially hilarious. But the all time greatest bit (that I've seen), was Ali G's interview with David and Victoria Beckham. It didn't really do justice to the sneaky genius of his show's premise since everyone was in on the joke, but it was still incredibly funny.

I caught the new episode last night. The part where Borat goes to the wine tasting in Mississippi and asks if the black guy is a slave killed me. And the gay converter said it's wrong to watch Will and Grace!

I also recall Dowd a few years ago writing a column about how she had a crush on Eminem. That's kind of creepy, considering how she's in her 50's, hair dye and heavy makeup not withstanding. It's like my mom being into hip hop.

And Scott, MoDo's not going anywhere. She won a Pulitzer in '99.

Dimmy, I don't care if she won the Nobel. Yes, she'll be around for a while. I still don't like her. And it's not just her irrational Bush-hatred that makes her such a bitch. She's on a high-horse... --s

She won a fucking Pulitzer in '99? 1999? God, I'll never trust the Pulitzer board again.

And the part on the Ali G with the gay converter was the best.

"So, it's, like, okay to shower with a man and admire his penis, but as soon as I put it in my mouth, that's crossed some kind of invisible line?"

I don't like her either, Scott, I'm just saying your hope of seeing her "taken down a notch" or whatever is unrealistic. I imagine winning a Pulitzer prize is kind of like becoming a tenured professor--you can become a total communist and study crazy stuff without being fired after that (or write vapid, annoying newspaper columns, as the case may be).

MoDo's columnist bio page on the NYT site says she did indeed win a '99 Pulitzer. It also has the photo of her I was referring to and says she graduated college in 1973, which puts her in her early fifties.

She won that Pulitzer for bringing the "patronizing, mean-spirited" attitude Scott decries to bear on Clinton during the Lewinsky scandal. Hey Scott, still think that that attitude is always a bad one?

"Dowd received the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, with the committee particularly citing her columns on the impeachment of Bill Clinton after his affair with Monica Lewinsky. Her acid wit and withering attacks on Clinton and his accusers made her a national media celebrity."

A newspaper cannot live on Pulitzer prizes alone. The NYT editorial page is mostly insufferable, with the exception of guest columnist Barbara Ehrenreich, David Brooks, and Nick Kristoff. Beyond those three, I'm not convinced that Bob Herbert (bless his soul), Paul Krugman, and Tom Friedman aren't actually computer algorithms—with William Safire representing a glitch in the matrix.

(MoDo's flaws being self-evident.)
