The good news here is that the stolen painting is not the only existing version of Edvard Munch's The Scream. I don't know if I've ever heard of an armed robbery at a gallery—art theives tend more toward jewel thieves than liquor store scourges. What's really wild is that this is not the first time a version of this painting was stolen from Oslo. The good news is that these efforts never work.
So, anyway, back to the irrational Bush hatred.

Posted by: BTD Greg at August 22, 2004 10:17 PMClearly a high profile stolen painting can't be sold anytime soon -- it seems like this must have been done to satisfy a particular collector. Somebody who is very fond of a painting that, to me, seems to have at this point been completely reduced to cliche. And somebody who is prepared to hire armed thugs to get what he wants.
Sounds like a fun guy. If I were in charge of such things, I'd start keeping a close eye on any Van Goghs and Klimts under my care -- it could just be that some supercriminal is putting together the ultimate dorm room.
Posted by: tom at August 23, 2004 9:24 AMReports I heard were that the robbers were expected to hold the painting for ransom. Clearly, eBay is not an option.
