You know, I think Viagra really is a wonder drug: it seems to have made Bob Dole an even bigger prick than he used to be.What did happen to America's favorite sweet, horny GOP grandpa? He's not a pundit, he doesn't make the Sunday circuit rounds of his own accords, and he has even little to add to the SBVT argument. He suggested that "odds are" they can't all be Republican liars and he seems to doubt that Kerry bled from his Vietnam wounds, a baseless charge neither substantiated by a first-hand account on behalf of Dole or confirmed by the people who were there and did see the wounds. Undignified for a man of his stature, and I'm sorry to see the baser elements of his party get to him. Unfortunately, I'm afraid he's now an official Douchebag of Liberty. He's very much like Gore... after a fairly distinguished career, he was avoided as an embarrassment by his own party and since then he has been trying to rehabilitate his image. The Viagra ads were a way to show he had a sense of humor about himself, a corrective to the old-fuddy image that haunted him throughout his White House run. Now, after being a GOP liability, he's able to show that he can be useful to the party politically. Which doesn't make it less maddening or pathetic, but I suspect that's the calculation involved.
Posted by: Chris in Boston at August 24, 2004 10:36 AMThat's all fine. Call him a douchebag.
But why...suddenly, is Kerry saying his first purple heart may have been from a self-inflicted wound? Is he himself now one of those "Republican liars"? I'm sorry to see the "baser elements" of the veterans getting to him.
Posted by: j.scott barnard at August 24, 2004 2:17 PMNo kidding Bob Dole thinks that Kerry's wounds are "superficial." The guy is a total badass. He came home from WII in a body cast. He nearly died twice. He lost more than 70 pounds. His right arm is still so fucked up that he can't lift it above shoulder height. And he got that way pulling one of his men to safety from an Nazi machine gun installation. The way I see it, if a guy like Bob Dole wants to call you a pussy, you just gotta shut up and take it. After helping save the free world and getting crippled in the process, he's got the right.
Posted by: steve-o at August 24, 2004 3:08 PMI think Jon Stewart mentioned last night's that Dole used to have the reputation of a hatchet man. It was a good bit about the SBVT -- worth catching on 7pm rerun.

Whereas if a man who had "other priorities" than military service tells you to fuck off, you can punch him?
Posted by: PG at August 24, 2004 3:53 PMYou can't lie about someone, period. Even if you're superman...
Posted by: Mike D at August 24, 2004 3:56 PMWho knew Bob Dole served in Vietnam along with John Kerry, thus putting him in a position to know what he's talking about here? And all these years we've been led to believe that he fought in World War II! Don't we feel silly!
The lovable grandpa phase was a deviation from the norm for Dole. He was a bastard a lot longer before that. Remember the "Democrat wars" he once spoke of, or one of my favorite TV clips of all time, "Stop lying about my record!"
It's possible to be a WWII vet and a stupid bastard at the same time, btw. Having served in the military does not mean you have incorruptible moral values or anything--see Lynndie England.
Posted by: Dimmy Karras at August 24, 2004 9:08 PMMike D, so far two major parts of the book have been proved right. Hard to call the Christmas in Cambodia accusation a lie. And now this:
Kerry received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered on December 2nd, 1968. But an entry in Kerry's own journal written nine days later, he writes that, quote, he and his crew hadn't been shot at yet, unquote. Kerry's campaign has said it is possible his first Purple Heart was awarded for an unintentionally self-inflicted wound.Which is exactly what the book alleges. Posted by: j.scott barnard at August 25, 2004 8:26 AM
scott, what is up with christmas in cambodia?? i am totally serious. i can't understand why anyone would care if a long time ago kerry said he was in cambodia a month before he actually was or whatever the story is. this is literally boggling my mind. my mind is very small and easily confused, but still.
Posted by: catherine at August 25, 2004 8:51 AMCatherine, he didn't say it once, a long time ago. He specifically said it in Senate debate of the Nicaraguan contras, he said it was "seared, seared in my memory" because he had been ordered to cross the border in violation of international law. He used it to promote his agenda. Then he said the same thing in a written report to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He said it over and over again, when truth be told, he was only near Cambodia. To exaggerate a little is one thing. To forget some details is another. But when you are on the one hand, trying to affect American foreign policy, whether or not you actually did or did not cross a border in violation of international law becomes a big deal. If he didn't cross the border, all this moral high ground in the debates and reports were based on falsehoods. --s
Posted by: j.scott barnard at August 25, 2004 12:57 PMbut wasn't he in cambodia? his dude friend was in cambodia, as kriston points out in a post on top, one of the swifties, but he apparently lied about it. so what makes you so sure kerry wasn't? and then in that case, honestly, who gives a fuck if it was christmas eve or not? and why is everyone so ready to trust the swifties over kerry? why are they so much more trustworthy?
