Should We Talk About the Weather? Should We Talk About the Government?

(Hi, hi, hi.)

Some might have noticed that the installation of Jim Hodges's "Directions" exhibition for the Hirshhorn, titled don't be afraid, was delayed this week. The work, a 70-foot-long billboard featuring reproductions of the phrase "Don't Be Afraid" as written by a host of United Nations delegates in their respective native languages and scripts, will run along the façade of the building. Naturally one might have suspected that a mustachioed man showed up and put the kibosh on the whole affair, but no: it was just the weather. I'm told that barring wind and rain it was planned to go up early this morning, but so far this morning has been . . . windy and rainy. Maybe next week.

Some might have also noticed that don't be afraid was first comissioned by the Worcester Art Museum for its "Wall at WAM" series of contemporary art installations. The work has also been featured at Chicago's MoCA, the Frieze Art Fair in London, and Art Basel Miami Beach, if I remember correctly. The first rendition may still be seen at WAM, hanging in the Renaissance court above, among other works, the Museum's famous Roman hunt mosaic from Antioch.

Just sayin'.

I'm not sure I 'get' the exhibition, unless it's sort of a tongue-in-cheek bow to some Americans' fears of black helicopters, one world government, etc., but then it doesn't seem likely to have made much sense in London. Though I suppose this from the website--
'Given Washington DC's role in international affairs, the placement of "don't be afraid" at the Hirshhorn uniquely reflects and connects to the diverse group of people living in the city and offers a message to guide thinking about the United States' relationships with other nations.'
--would provide another ironic meaning for the phrase vis a vis the UN, the US and the failure of the former to be able to restrain the latter.

Or maybe it's just art instead of politics. Ha.
