Full disclosure: I know only as much about fashion as people tell me. I only know who Karen Walker is because Valerie linked to her collection. Still, as the man once said, though I can't say what fashion is, I know it when I see it.
This and especially this, I think are really fantastic. And before you complain to me that no one can actually wear parachute nylon without looking as if gym just let out, let me point you to this get-up as an example of eminently wearable fashion.
The only other nugget of advice I have to offer is one my friend R. and I agreed on a while back: High-top kicks are sweet, yo. Pick up some Air Force Ones for fall.

the skinny pants (jeans, really) are de rigueur at the moment, don't you know. but they are different from those acid wash things you pegged in middle school, so don't drag those out just yet. anyway, they may be de rigueur mortis before long...so...whatever that means.
i'm feeling a heroin-chic/grunge revival underway too...in case you're interested. though that may blow over...
Skinny pants I understand. I won't participate, but I can see how those will look good on some people. (GAP's exploitation of Audrey Hepburn does illustrate this, in that "If it takes Audrey Hepburn to make it look good, I ain't gonna try" way.)
But formal shorts? Really? I mean, shorts with pantyhose? WTF?
Unrelatedly, I hope your folks are feeling better. I had my own family health related hiatus in Texas this year.

I will readily admit I cannot wear these pants because I'm of a more voluptuous build, but even my best friend who is about a size 4 and is 5'7'' looks bad-bad-bad in the pants, but insists on wearing them. She's quite thin and attractive, but the pants make her look like she has the fattest inner thighs and ass which she doesn't actually have. I can't wait til this bit is over.
