This video portrait business by Ryan McGinley on actors nominated for Oscars is just gay. How is this not parody? We're all going to be doing this on Facebook or whatever we're using in a year's time. (Courtesy the Governess)

Posted by: Tyler Green at February 11, 2008 4:18 PMI am using it in the derogatory sense of the word. There's something about narcissistic or overly earnest presentations that I associate with the specific derogatory "gay" expression, one that I think is, in this context, fairly divorced from a context relating back to homosexuality. I'm liberal or descriptivist on word reclamation projects, at least in the case of "gay" or "fag", but maybe I'm being tone deaf.

Posted by: R at February 11, 2008 6:06 PMYou are being tone deaf. The "derogatory" usage is prima facie bigoted and offensive. Both GLAAD and NLGJA have extensively documented the etymology of the derogatory use of the word and have explained why it is offensive.
